Fun with Gears:

This is part of my latest order from my gear maker, David Holley, at Kamloops MAKERSPACE. He designs and cuts these very precise wooden gears on a laser cutter. I definitely wouldn’t be able to build my kinetic sculptures without David’s gears!

Fun Fact!

Here are 20 gear sets, each having 2 gears at a ratio of 1:3. If you could somehow attach these to your bike and turn the first gear with your pedals (the gear on the right) at one revolution per second, your back axle, attached at gear set #20, (on the left), would make 3,486,784,401 revolutions per second!

The circumference of the big gears is 40 cm. That means you would travel about 1,400,000 km/second!  You could easily ride to the moon and back in less than one second at that speed! (Well, if there was no friction involved. That’s a big problem!)
